The signs are obvious when a Friends group is ailing. Fewer volunteers, fewer events, less money raised, and less involvement in the community.

Sometimes, the Friends group is the brainchild of a talented individual who successfully ran the organization as a one-person show. But, they never built a sustainable team, and now they are leaving town.

Or maybe the book sale has become a pet project that needs a facelift but long-timers refuse to allow change. Revitalizing the organization might mean reconsidering what your Friends group is for and establishing new goals that attract new people with new ideas.


  • Evaluate activities for their contributions to the library.
  • Develop a recruitment strategy for new volunteers and leadership.
  • Find out what other successful library Friends groups are doing right.

Pat Wagner has been a trainer and consultant for libraries and allied institutions since 1978. She has been a frequent visitor to Florida libraries and was a presenter with the Sunshine State Library Leadership Institute for several years. Pat is known for her good-humored and practical programs.
