You love your job. You love your library. You find a deep sense of accomplishment helping your patrons recover from devastating natural disasters – or any of the 101 other things you help them with on a daily basis. But in the midst of all that, you have your own challenges to deal with. There are days when you’ve given just about all you have to give. At the end of the day you feel drained or irritated – or both!

“Compassion fatigue” is a term normally heard in a medical/caregiver environment, describing a caregiver’s reaction to chronic stress that results in feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, self-doubt, lack of focus, and fatigue. Check, check, and double check. Because isn’t that what you do every day? You are a caregiver, plain and simple, and that caring and giving is magnified in the face of natural disasters such as hurricanes.

How do we deal with the depth of fatigue that can accompany helping others while trying to handle the changes and disruptions in our own lives?

And then there’s the proverbial $64,000 question – even when things are somewhat calm, how do we achieve balance in our lives in this “Email-voice mail-Smart phone-Instagram-Facebook-Twitter-texting” world?? Add to that the changes we experience in our automation systems, technology, work schedules, staff, and even our patrons, and it’s no wonder we lose our balance along the way.

We’re going to look at ways we can take back control of our own lives. We’ll uncover time-robbers that have been stealing our most precious commodity and learn how to deal with them more effectively. We’ll also reflect on what is most important in our lives and decide how we are going to make time for those priorities.

In other words, we’ll explore ways to take care of ourselves so we can continue to show compassion and care to our patrons.
