    This is the first week of 2017–and the idea of New Year’s resolutions is getting lots of press. In looking ahead at what we’ll be working on at our library, we are making plans and trying to take care of details. As at every library, we have many different plans, at different stages, that we are juggling! How do we manage these plans as well as the ever-important daily work of serving our users? As managers and administrators, we need to earn and keep the trust of library workers and library users.

    An article from the Sept. 1, 2009, issue of Management Today, “Ten ways to be a trusted leader” is a concise reminder of what day-to-day leadership means for many of us.

    “Be seen, be heard – and listen
    Muck in from time to time
    Be honest
    Deliver bad news in person
    Be consistent in your decisions
    Don’t have favorites
    Praise when praise is due
    Keep your promises
    Admit your mistakes..”

    Thanks for the reminder about leadership, Cay. The ‘ten ways’ from that article are all really good areas for self-examination when contemplating how to improve as a leader during the new year. Communication, honesty, consistency, fairness, and taking responsibility for one’s mistakes are all essential to being respected as a leader. One of my former ‘bosses’ summarized his philosophy of leadership in the work place as, “Make sure the praise flows downward and the blame flows upwards.” I have always considered that a pretty good statement about the essence of leading people in the workplace.
